How to Make Your Own Xero Sandals

To make your own sandals, you’ll measure your foot to get the perfect size outsole, you’ll punch the toe hole with our included hollow punch. If you need to, you can trim the sole with a pair of kitchen scissors. Then use one of our simple lacing styles that we’ll show you.Or, if you like, you can order a custom-made pair of Xero Shoes, send us a tracing of your foot and we’ll do all the work.

Deciding between 4mm Connect and 6mm Contact? The 4mm Connect outsoles give you the closest-to-barefoot feeling. The 6mm Contact still has great ground-feel, but with a bit more protection and, since it’s a bit stiffer, a slightly “smoother” ride. Check out this video for more about Connect vs. Contact.

Choose between 4mm Connect & 6mm Contact

The important question is really just:
How much barefoot feel do you want?
The 4mm Connect is the closest thing you’ll get to barefoot, but with a layer of protection. The 6mm Contact still has great ground-feel, but “smooths out the ride” a bit more. Some people prefer the 4mm on trails, because it lets them really grip the rocks and roots… others like the 6mm in that situation because it provides more protection. Similarly, some people like the 4mm on roads because it’s really like being barefoot… and others like the 6mm because it’s a bit stiffer and, therefore, makes even a smooth surface feel a bit smoother.

Get the right fit: Xero Shoes are not sold by shoe size, since shoe size is notoriously inaccurate (you probably have shoes in your closet that are different sizes, but all fit you!). Instead we ask you to measure your foot to get the correct size. Watch this video to see how.

Get the correct size
This video shows you how to measure your foot:

Since many of us wear shoes that are the wrong size, you select your Xero Shoes kit based on the actual length of your foot.
The best way measure your foot length is this: Place a piece of paper (newspaper if you have big feet) against a wall, stand on the paper with your heel lightly touching the wall, make a mark in line with the front of your foot (your first or second toe), and then measure the distance from the edge of the paper to that mark. Do not simply step on a ruler to measure since the angle that you’ll be looking at rarely gives an accurate measurement.NOTE: The actual sole you’ll get is 1/2″ (13mm) bigger than the measurement. If you order, say, the “Up to 10 inch”, the sole you’ll receive is 10.5″ long. But, DO NOT order a size smaller than your foot measurement! If your foot is, say, 10 1/4″ order the size for “feet up to 10 1/2 inches”, otherwise you’ll end up with the wrong size.

Love them!!!

Already so comfortable and I normally HATE having anything between my toes. Had to trim a fair bit off but I do have really narrow feet. Easy to do and sand off to neaten up. Got the toe loop for them, really like the look of them with it 🙂 Thank you!! 😀

...kit is complete, and easy to do! I have been wearing barefoot footwear for almost ten years, and these are incredible footwear for the price! Will know more in months since I tend to wear out soles quickly, and only have been wearing both the 4mm/6mm versions to test them out for 2-3 weeks...

New to minimalist running!

I just received my DIY sandals and was so excited to get them laced up to hit the trail! The instructional videos were easy to follow, and I was running around my neighborhood in no time. It's going to be a learning experience to figure out exactly how I prefer to tie them, but so far I am very pleased!

comfy but weak

It took me a while to get used to this, but once i found the right tension it became my favorite sandal. After a few months of use the know in the front came undone, but xero shoes was kind enough to send me a new pair of laces. Now, a few months later, it happened again. After a good few hundred miles of use, the know in the front gives out.

Fun to make!

I mostly had a great time making these. Wish I'd tried putting the laces through before burning them, because it was actually easier unburned. I pushed them through with the blunter end of a pair of scissors. Trimming requires serious scissors, btw. Such fun deciding the design I wanted. I didn't put any knots in, so they're adjustable and I can change up the final lacing. They feel really comfy--looking forward to wearing them for a day!

It's what I've been hoping for

Initially I grew up running with heavily cushioned shoes and have always been on the heavier side. In my Younger years I could feel pain in my hips from taking the impact of running directly in my joints and stopped for many years any type of excercise. As I wanted to get fitter and feel better, I learned about barefoot living and minimalism and decided to try the diy sandal kit in the middle of winter. I cannot overstate how good it felt to use my feet for what felt like the first time. There was soreness of course for the first week or so from being so accustomed to regular shoes. However my body is still getting accustomed to tlit but I only have good things to say. I have been lifting weights for quite awhile. But zero sandals have gotten me back into running for sure.

A perfect start to barefoot running.

I've been thinking about barefoot/minimalist running for a while and looked into the huarache style sandals as a way to start. I saw several DIY options, but the Xero kit looked like it would save me a ton of time. The instructions were easy to follow and I custom trimmed them to the shape of my foot. I'm pleased with how they feel on the trails. I ran up and down steep, rocky hills and off-camber trails up to 45 degrees. There was hardly any slipping, and the ties held my feet in place easily. The true test for me was running in muddy conditions. I laced them in the traditional around-the-ankle style and headed for the trails. The snows had mostly melted and the trails had places of standing and running water. The tread gave me a surprising amount of traction. More than I expected. In fact, I probably slipped even less than I do in my trail shoes in the same conditions. The mud between my feet and the sandal did make it slip a little when I went down hills or off-camber trails, but the tie system held them on securely. Running through streams and mud puddles was a blast. I did have to clear debris from under my foot every so often. But that was to be expected, given the water mixed with leaves and sticks I was going through. I'm very happy with these sandals. If you want a barefoot feel as light as a feather, these are for you.

Amazing option for growing feet!

Amazing minimalist sandal for my growing daughters! I was struggling to find my girls (age 5 and 8) healthy sandals that weren’t too big or too expensive. These are the perfect fit! My girls love them and I love that they can spend 8 months of the year in natural healthy footwear!

New to minimalist footwear.

I ordered the build your own huarache set up. Didn’t have to shave the blanks I got, the shape was pretty close to my foot. It was enjoyable trying different straps and ways of tying off extra lace. I wanted extra on the sandal in case of breakage. My running in them is capped to foot discomfort, but I’m running on logging roads and I’m not sure there is a more uncomfortable surface to run on. Love running in them most when it’s raining, the back roads and have deep puddles and with a pair of shorts it’s much more comfortable than wet socks. Doing about 20 miles a week of trail running in them.
