How to Make Your Own Xero Sandals

To make your own sandals, you’ll measure your foot to get the perfect size outsole, you’ll punch the toe hole with our included hollow punch. If you need to, you can trim the sole with a pair of kitchen scissors. Then use one of our simple lacing styles that we’ll show you.Or, if you like, you can order a custom-made pair of Xero Shoes, send us a tracing of your foot and we’ll do all the work.

Deciding between 4mm Connect and 6mm Contact? The 4mm Connect outsoles give you the closest-to-barefoot feeling. The 6mm Contact still has great ground-feel, but with a bit more protection and, since it’s a bit stiffer, a slightly “smoother” ride. Check out this video for more about Connect vs. Contact.

Choose between 4mm Connect & 6mm Contact

The important question is really just:
How much barefoot feel do you want?
The 4mm Connect is the closest thing you’ll get to barefoot, but with a layer of protection. The 6mm Contact still has great ground-feel, but “smooths out the ride” a bit more. Some people prefer the 4mm on trails, because it lets them really grip the rocks and roots… others like the 6mm in that situation because it provides more protection. Similarly, some people like the 4mm on roads because it’s really like being barefoot… and others like the 6mm because it’s a bit stiffer and, therefore, makes even a smooth surface feel a bit smoother.

Get the right fit: Xero Shoes are not sold by shoe size, since shoe size is notoriously inaccurate (you probably have shoes in your closet that are different sizes, but all fit you!). Instead we ask you to measure your foot to get the correct size. Watch this video to see how.

Get the correct size
This video shows you how to measure your foot:

Since many of us wear shoes that are the wrong size, you select your Xero Shoes kit based on the actual length of your foot.
The best way measure your foot length is this: Place a piece of paper (newspaper if you have big feet) against a wall, stand on the paper with your heel lightly touching the wall, make a mark in line with the front of your foot (your first or second toe), and then measure the distance from the edge of the paper to that mark. Do not simply step on a ruler to measure since the angle that you’ll be looking at rarely gives an accurate measurement.NOTE: The actual sole you’ll get is 1/2″ (13mm) bigger than the measurement. If you order, say, the “Up to 10 inch”, the sole you’ll receive is 10.5″ long. But, DO NOT order a size smaller than your foot measurement! If your foot is, say, 10 1/4″ order the size for “feet up to 10 1/2 inches”, otherwise you’ll end up with the wrong size.

Your purchase helps support the Tarahumara Indians in Mexico

The huarache tire sandals made by the Tarahumara, the indigenous people of the Copper Canyon in Mexico, inspired our DIY kit. The Tarahumara have been suffering under drought, food shortages, lack of access to health care, and other challenges. Love them!!!

Already so comfortable and I normally HATE having anything between my toes. Had to trim a fair bit off but I do have really narrow feet. Easy to do and sand off to neaten up. Got the toe loop for them, really like the look of them with it 🙂 Thank you!! 😀

I bought the DIY kit about 5 years ago. After wearing them everywhere they finally broke. I just bought the kit again and I love them so much! I wear them everywhere, to church, on walks, all over the place! If we didn't live in Texas where there are fire ants, I would wear them on my property too. But I have my Lena's and some socks for that 😉

Create your own Sandals

I bought 2 pair, same size. One for myself the other for my son, we share shoes a lot. I followed the instructions from a video, drew an outline of my foot, cut away the excess, marked a spot for the hole, punched the hole, threaded the laces and tied a simple sandal. It’s comfortable but probably too tight. The front lace digs into my foot a bit too much. It got better during the corse of a week and I’m happy with the result. Still, for my son’s shoes, I tried something else. I fitted his feet in the middle of the sole giving adequate room for the heel. I marked the spot between first 2 toes, but I made another mark about a quarter inch further forward. I measured the length to the front and side and eventually determined an optimal spot on both shoes .Punched the holes and, threaded the laces loosely through the three holes. Handed them over for my son to tie as he wanted. He has more room to play with because the front hole is further forward and the sole has not been cut. He has tied and retied several times and is happy with the looser fit. He may cut the sole later if it becomes necessary. Similarly, he will not cut the lace until he is comfortable with it. I think the message is there is no rush….

What a wonderful way to learn to go barefoot

My reading led me to believe that going barefoot reduces the chances of falls as I age a couple years ago. However I'm an extreme tenderfoot and wasn't getting much benefit just walking around at home. It will take a bit of time to get used to the FeelTrue Sandal, but not too much. I hate flip flops. I'll also learn how to walk correctly with a toe down step.

Big Hit

My wife is difficult to surprise and super picky about her footwear. She loved the DIY sandal kit I got her for Mother's Day and immediately was inspired to come up with an interesting configuration for her toe and ankle straps. Next time we camp, we’ll put her feet on Instagram to show off her handiwork.

Great sandals, but had a oopsie

I loved assembling these, and once I got the tension right, the fit was great. But then I thought they looked way too wide for my feet so I wanted to trim them. That went not so well and I cut too much. I already ordered a new kit because I really like the feel of them.
