How to Make Your Own Xero Sandals

To make your own sandals, you’ll measure your foot to get the perfect size outsole, you’ll punch the toe hole with our included hollow punch. If you need to, you can trim the sole with a pair of kitchen scissors. Then use one of our simple lacing styles that we’ll show you.

Deciding between 4mm Connect and 6mm Contact? The 4mm Connect outsoles give you the closest-to-barefoot feeling. The 6mm Contact still has great ground-feel, but with a bit more protection and, since it’s a bit stiffer, a slightly “smoother” ride. Check out this video for more about Connect vs. Contact.

Choose between 4mm Connect & 6mm Contact

The important question is really just:
How much barefoot feel do you want?
The 4mm Connect is the closest thing you’ll get to barefoot, but with a layer of protection. The 6mm Contact still has great ground-feel, but “smooths out the ride” a bit more. Some people prefer the 4mm on trails, because it lets them really grip the rocks and roots… others like the 6mm in that situation because it provides more protection. Similarly, some people like the 4mm on roads because it’s really like being barefoot… and others like the 6mm because it’s a bit stiffer and, therefore, makes even a smooth surface feel a bit smoother.

Get the right fit: Xero Shoes are not sold by shoe size, since shoe size is notoriously inaccurate (you probably have shoes in your closet that are different sizes, but all fit you!). Instead we ask you to measure your foot to get the correct size. Watch this video to see how.

Get the correct size
This video shows you how to measure your foot:

Since many of us wear shoes that are the wrong size, you select your Xero Shoes kit based on the actual length of your foot.
The best way measure your foot length is this: Place a piece of paper (newspaper if you have big feet) against a wall, stand on the paper with your heel lightly touching the wall, make a mark in line with the front of your foot (your first or second toe), and then measure the distance from the edge of the paper to that mark. Do not simply step on a ruler to measure since the angle that you’ll be looking at rarely gives an accurate measurement. NOTE: The actual sole you’ll get is 1/2″ (13mm) bigger than the measurement. If you order, say, the “Up to 10 inch”, the sole you’ll receive is 10.5″ long. But, DO NOT order a size smaller than your foot measurement! If your foot is, say, 10 1/4″ order the size for “feet up to 10 1/2 inches”, otherwise you’ll end up with the wrong size.

Love them!!!

Already so comfortable and I normally HATE having anything between my toes. Had to trim a fair bit off but I do have really narrow feet. Easy to do and sand off to neaten up. Got the toe loop for them, really like the look of them with it 🙂 Thank you!! 😀

So simple and maybe a little bit fun to "build"

I’ve been wearing them non-stop for the six or eight weeks that I’ve had them. Putting them together was kind of fun and I’ve actually enjoyed telling people about them. The other day, walking into a grocery store, a guy stopped me and asked me where I got them. I think I’m a convert for life.

Not Comfortable

Soles are great. 4mm didn't need to trim anything. Took great care to lace them after watching a dozen poorly filmed videos about it. Like them but the string bites into my foot if its tight enough so that the front half doesn't do a reverse flip flop when I walk at any speed. Very disappointed.

A best bet from a would be barefooter's perspective

I started barefooting wherever possible five to ten years ago. I started using the 4 mm Connect DIY sandal kit the year before the pandemic because I hate flip flops and I needed something minimal, convenient, and easy to slip on for when I was forced to wear shoes in businesses, etc. I actually had questions when first buying my first kit and sent email to customer support, and the representative was very helpful. I used a quasi-slip on lacing method with no thong between the great and second toe. It's not totally hands free like a flip flop or true slip on, but it is the next best thing, and it's still really easy to put on and take off, and also very comfortable. Wearing the sandals wasn't quite like going barefoot, but it was very close in the most important respects. Just by virtue of having 4 mm of material between your soles and the ground, you don't get quite the same tactile feel and sensations from ground texture you might enjoy as a barefooter, but a lot of the tactile feel does come through. If you are used to wearing regular shoes, you will probably really enjoy this in comparison as you adapt to the sandals. As a bonus, the soles protect against hot pavement in summer. The sole truly is well designed and minimal enough to have no impact on the natural gait you develop from walking barefoot. The soles and laces are also both quite durable, and there wasn't any need to worry about replacing one before the other. When the pandemic hit, I started wearing the sandals outside the house all the time, since there was concern in the early days about transmission from virus that had settled on the floor. Eventually, it just became a habit to wear them in most circumstances. The good news? My feet seem to be almost as tough now as they were two years ago (as they should be). The sandals excel for the original purpose I bought them for. They look good, are comfortable, and are easy to carry in the car and slip on. It's close enough to being barefoot that it's not really annoying to wear them preemptively, and the sandals are accepted anywhere you would not be expected to wear formal footwear. It subjectively feels like they fall between flip flops and more substantial sandals in terms of where you will be judged for wearing them, but I can say I've been spared the annoyance of the "looks of disapproval" you get when going barefoot, and more importantly, they have been the best solution for meeting shoe requirements (either posted or brought up ad hoc by an establishment's staff).

DIY Sandals

Well, since this is probably my 4th. or 5th. pair plus several different cord colors, I believe they are Great! I have worn “foot-coffins” 2 times in the last 2 1/2 to 3 years! The ONLY footwear I’ve worn in that time frame, has been my DIY huaraches/sandals! So either I'm barefooted (80%+ of the time) or in Xero DIY! I do different things with the cords and I’ve had a lot of compliments (and a women threatened to take them off me in WalMart), so Im Very Satisfied, Very! David Wyont
