Product Description

We started with our best-selling trail hiking and running shoe, the TerraFlex, and morphed it into a high-topped, fully waterproof hiking boot that’s ready for your next extreme adventure. Meet the Xcursion.

Here’s how the Xcursion gives you the protection you want:

  • Gusseted tongue and sealed waterproof inner liner
  • Additional water-repellent membrane inside the outer mesh

Good fit

These boots are super comfy! The toe box is very roomy and my feet stay warm in the snow.

good design but some issues

Overall I really like these shoes, primarily for the width flexibility around the ball of the foot. My feet are are kind of ******* up after 30+ years of running trails in orthodox running shoes, so I'll continue to purchase these. However, two issues: First the tread variability on these shoes makes them slide both in the summer on scree and in the winter on snow. I have your trail running shoes that have more variability in the tread and I don't slide as much. It would be nice to have that on this hiking(walking) shoe. The second is just an odd curiosity but the material on these shoes has a tendency "fur up". So parts of the side have a furry exterior (about 2 cm at the maximum). It doesn't seem to affect the shoe function but it is quite weird. This is the second pair that I've notice that. Anyway, good shoe, put more tread! 🙂

Great

Great minimalist waterproof boot. The sole does start a bit tough but breaks in nicely to allow the foot to engage naturally. The waterproofing is solid. On my first day out with these I encountered very heavy rain and had to walk through very deep puddles. Like another reviewer I was sad to notice my socks got a bit wet. I realized that while the boot itself is perfectly waterproof the laces and tongue need to be tied properly to be submerged above a certain distance and even then, while they will handle rain perfectly, it’s worth keeping in mind that the tongue area rests lower to the ground than many other boots with a more significant lift to them. So keeping in mind their exact abilities I had much, much better performance and completely dry days after that learning experience. These are waterproof work boots not Wellingtons after all. I have yet to fully explore the exact nature of the waterproofing around the tongue but am certain this is as good as boots can get. As for work abilities I found the construction of the toe box is surprisingly reinforced while being light and not chunky. It is the “just right” amount for me as I don’t like a composite toe but the extra bit of protection is appreciated. Walking through grass, mud, and sticks is the strength of this boot, and it does it perfectly. As with other Xero shoes I feel my weight rests naturally, balanced and on my heels when standing still, and allows my feet to flex and legs to stride healthily. I encountered two instances within severals weeks of wearing these in the rain when the improved balance was noticeable and effective. In one instance I hastily descended a ladder someone else had set and when I placed my weight down entirely on my left foot the ladder began to fall over to the left. However, wearing the boot it was natural and effortless for my weight to shift and stay centered, I felt sturdy and not wobbly even for a moment thanks to the nature of the boot. The second time I was operating a condor and I operated my bucket arm while driving forward and had a minor snapping motion due to the janky controls of the particular machine. However I immediately landed on my feet and was impressed by how grounded and safe I felt due to the superior balance the shoe allows. Overall I would highly recommend them even though for walking on very smooth surfaces the chevron treads are perhaps slightly too aggressive as they really excel on other surfaces. So add the daylite hiker to my wish list as well! Not a bad problem to have. 5 stars.

Buying second pair

Really like these boots. Extremely comfortable. Wore them all day walking around Chicago doing tourist things. They get a bit warm on hotter days but should be very nice this winter. Hopefully the traction is good in snow/icy conditions. Just ordered a 2nd pair for work. I'm a size 12 in 95% of shoes I order however I ordered these one size bigger as the eu sizing was closer to what the us 12 is. And I am planning on wearing them with some thick wool socks in the winter.

12 hours and all's good. I e-mailed Merrill 5 years ago asking them to make this shoe.

These are great addition to my Xero "collection"

These will be my 6th pair of Xero shoes. I am trying to replace all of my current shoes with Xero shoes as they are more comfortable to me. I wear Xero shoes daily now- for everything. They have helped with aches and pains in my hip area and made getting movement in my life much less painful. I picked up these for the winter months, to have something waterproof as the weather starts to turn colder and wetter here. These are the first Xero shoes I have had that required a little break in- but I am on day 2 of wearing them all day and they are already starting to feel like they should. Initially they were very stiff and I had some rubbing in the heel area. I took the soles out and readjusted them as I put them back in and played with the lacing some and today they are loosening up a bit and feeling better in the heel area. I will be taking them on a 6 mile hike tomorrow. The temperature has dropped today, so I will be very glad to have these. The sole is definitely thicker than the daylight hikers and not quite as flexible- but there is a little more flex to me than the Merrel's I have had for years. I love the weight of these- much lighter than my other boots. You are not really going to feel the ground as much in these- I knew that going in and appreciate a sturdier sole in the Xero lineup. I will be wearing these alot !

I Can Finally Hike the Other Three-Forths of The Year

Like many of you, I've been searching a long time for a waterproof minimalist hiking shoe. I live in Wisconsin where it’s warm and/or dry less than a quarter of the year. Since most minimalist shoes are not water resistant, much less waterproof, hiking in grass with just dew on it is a non-starter unless you want wet feet. A day after I got my new size 14 (yes, huge and dorky looking) Xcursion boots, I went on a 5 mile hike in snowy, slushy, muddy, leaf covered trails thanks to an early snowfall in the Fall. To my excitement, I no longer had to think so hard about how to avoid puddles and mud… I could just walk right through it all! I also own a pair of TerraFlex shoes and for whatever reason the Xcursions seemed to be less slippery than the Terraflex on the slippery mud and leaf covered trails. As many have mentioned already, the Xcursions are heavier and considerably stiffer than the TerraFlex shoes, and as such, considerably less comfortable on first fit. I have pressure points on both feet where the lace area digs into the top of my toes as I hike… hopefully this will go away as the shoes break-in. That issue aside, the Xcursions kept my feet warm and dry on the 30 degree day I tested them. I appreciate that the top to lace holders use hooks instead of eyelets making the boots easier to get on and off. The rather simple, flat sole of the shoe works while for the type of hiking I do. Tree roots and rocks I sometimes step on don’t bother my feet (with a few exceptions). The laces seem quite strong and I always double tie them so they don’t come undone. While I think $159 is a lot of money for a pair of shoes, there just aren’t any other brand of shoes on the market today that offer all that the Xcursion does at anywhere near the price. Unless something else comes along that I like better, the Xcursions are my new go-to hiking boots.

Perfect!

I bought the men's Xcursion boots for my 12 year old son for winter. We have a hard time finding shoes to fit his feet as they are a bit thick. Not only are these boots very well made and handsome, they fit like they were made just for him! He is thrilled and so am I, as finding shoes that for him is a bit stressful. And we insist on minimalistic shoes for good foot health. Thank you Xero!!

Great boot!

As a relatively new convert to minimalist shoes I was concerned these would provide a little too much feedback from the ground and be painful or distracting due to watching my foot placement, but the soles seem sturdy enough that I can walk confidently across rocks and boulders. I've read that some don't like that they aren't as flexy, but I appreciate the sturdiness for hiking.
