Barefoot Running in the NYC Marathon

CBS News has a feature on barefoot running and the New York City Marathon… a number of times, they refer to the fact that if you run barefoot, your form changes and you become a forefoot striker instead of a heel striker.

Now, as I’ve mentioned before: barefoot running is NOT just about taking off your shoes and running barefoot! Want to see proof? Look at the close-up of the guy running starting about 56 seconds into the video. HE’S HEEL STRIKING!

If you take off your shoes and run barefoot or in huaraches, your body is giving you information (sensations) that, if you listen to them and if you make adjustments based on what you hear/feel, will probably get you to stop landing on your heels first (the idea that your heels never hit the ground when you run barefoot isn’t true).

But if you hold onto a “no pain, no gain” mentality, or if you simply don’t pay attention, you can run barefoot with the same crappy form you used in shoes.

The real invitation with barefoot and huarache running is to be aware (as Michael Sandler likes to say, “Running barefoot is running aware-foot.”)

And good luck to all the barefoot NYC marathoners!
