Z-Trail Size Guide – Men

Sandals don’t fit the same way as shoes. And Xeros may not fit the same as other sandals. Just because you wear, say, a size 10 Nike Free, that doesn’t mean you’ll wear a size 10 Umara Z-Trail (and, I’m willing to bet you have other shoes that are 9.5 or 10.5… so are you really a 10 😉 ?)

By following the instructions below, you’ll get the correct fit for your Umara-Z-Trail.

NOTE: Please follow these instructions to avoid ordering problems

NOTE FOR Z-TREK OWNERS:  The Z-Trek is a TINY bit longer than the Z-Trail, so you may need a different size (bigger) in the Z-Trail vs. your Z-Trek. The templates, below, show both products. If your toes are close to the front edge of your Z-Trek, then you’ll probably be best in the next higher Z-Trail size.

3 Simple Steps to the Correct Fit

1) Measure your foot

Measure your feet for huarache barefoot sandals

  • Place a piece of paper against a wall (if you have VERY large feet, use a piece of newspaper.
  • Place your foot on the paper, with your heel against the wall.
  • Make a mark on the paper at the furthest point away from the wall… this will either be just in front of your big toe or second toe
  • Take a ruler and measure from the edge of the paper to the mark you made.

Here’s a video showing the process

2. Check your measurement against the charts, below

This will give you a good idea of your size… but PLEASE follow the next step whenever possible.

3. Verify the correct fit by printing the size template and comparing it to your foot

If you seem to be “between” sizes, we recommend choosing the larger size.

Product Description

Why are some people calling our Umara Z-Trail “The Ultimate Sandal 2.0”?

Well, last year’s Z-Trek seemed to be the Ultimate Sandal… but the new Z-Trail takes it a step further. It gives you an unparalleled combination of:

  • Protection
  • Comfort
  • Light Weight
  • Flexibility
  • Durability
  • Versatility
  • and Affordability

What can you do in your Z-Trail sandals? Practically anything!

  • At then end of a day of hiking, pull off your heavy, stiff, smelly boots and slip into the freedom, comfort, and flexibility of the Z-Trail… they’re so light you’ll barely notice them on your feet (and will barely tell they were in your bag!).
  • Pull ’em out when you need to cross a stream — they’re water resistant Okay, if you’re using them as a camp shoe, be warned: You may find that you can use them to hike INSTEAD of your boots! Talk about saving weight… send your boots home. 😉
  • Enjoy a run, on trails or roads, with just the right amount of protection, and lightweight flexibility that’ll make you feel like you’re practically barefoot.
  • Lifting weights at Crossfit — the Zero-Drop sole is perfect for deadlifts and squats, and the light weight makes pull-ups easier, too.
  • Yoga class? Well, the grippy soles make the Z-Trail like having a yoga mat on your feet all the time. Do your own class anywhere you are!
  • Head downstream… whether your in a canoe, a kayak, a raft, or on a paddleboard, the Z-Trail hold securely and comfortably on your feet. But if you decide to slip ’em off, don’t worry, they float!
  • Take a walk — anywhere you like, from a mountain trail to an urban jungle. The comfort of the Z-Trail will surprise you.
  • #FeelRealFun — do whatever you like in your Z-Trail. With our 5,000 mile sole warranty, they can handle it.

What makes the Z-Trail special is the 3-layer FeelLite™ sole.

Z-Trail FeelLite sport sandal sole

  • The bottom has our FeelTrue® rubber for great grip and abrasion resistance.
  • The middle layer of TrailFoam™ provides an incredible amount of force absorption and protection.
  • Then, the top BareFoam™ layer adds a perfect amount of comfort.
  • And the FeelLite™ sole still maintains enough flexibility to allow for natural movement and just-right ground-feel.

What’s the difference between the Z-Trek and Z-Trail?

Trek-versus-Trail-Roll

That’s the Z-Trek on the left, and the Z-Trail on the right. You can see that the Z-Trail is crazy flexible, but not quite as much as the Z-Trek.

I like to think that the Z-Trail is about protection and comfort first, and the Z-Trek is about connection first.

If I’ve been wearing my Z-Trails around for a while, enjoying the comfort, when I then put on the Z-Trek, I think, “Oh, right, I can FEEL things again!” So I go back and forth between them, depending on how much I want to feel.

Let’s talk about weight! This is maybe the best part.

The Z-Trail is about 20% lighter than the Z-Trek. But that’s nothing. Let’s compare the Z-Trail to a traditional sport sandal:

The reviews for the Z-Trail have been AMAZING. Pretty much everyone says that they’re the best sandal they’ve worn.

Check out these reviews (and then click the REVIEWS tab, above to see more!):

More reasons you’ll love your Z-Trail sandals:

  • Super-comfortable tubular webbing — no hard edges.
  • Adjustable Z-pattern — get the right tension across your foot, over your foot, and behind your heel.
  • Three color combinations.
  • 10mm (~3/8″) FeelLite™ outsole protects you from unpleasant surfaces while still providing great “ground-feel”.
  • Elegant contour surrounds your foot, but doesn’t add unnecessary support.
  • Super light weight — a Men’s size 9 sandal averages 5.4 ounces each.
  • “Zero-Drop” — your heel isn’t elevated; your feet are anatomically correct.
  • Rust-proof nylon hardware.
  • 100% Vegan (like all our products).
  • Ready to wear — the lacing is already done for you. Just slide in your foot and go.
  • Heel cup — keeps your heel in place, helps keep out debris.
  • 5,000 mile sole warranty! Wear out your Z-Trail soles in under 5,000 miles and we’ll replace them for a nominal cost (details here).

CARING for your Z-Trail

Because of the TrailFoam™ in the Z-Trail, these need a bit of extra attention. Do not leave Z-Trail in hot cars or exposed to intense direct sun. This could cause the TrailFoam™ to deform and is not covered by our warranty.

How to adjust your Umara Z-Trail for a perfect fit

Follow these simple video instructions to get the “just right” tension. This video is showing the Z-Trek, that uses a similar webbing system. But the Z-Trail hardware doesn’t have the “hook.”

What can I do in the Z-Trail?

Practically anything. Take a walk on the beach, a hike in the woods, hang out with friend, stroll around the camp site, approach a climb, paddle a canoe or a raft, do yoga or Crossfit, run a marathon…

I’m not sure that Z-Trail, or any sandal for that matter, is right for lateral motion sports, like tennis or basketball.

So, use your common sense and HAVE FUN!

What’s the difference between the Men’s and Women’s Z-Trail

The women’s Z-Trail is a bit narrower, and the webbing is 4mm thinnner.

So if you have a narrow foot, whether you’re a man or woman, you may want to check the “women’s” sizing templates and see how those work for you. Similarly, if you have a wider foot, regardless of your gender, check out the “men’s” templates.

How do I adjust the fit in Z-Trails?

Simple. First, slide the webbing through the slots on the outside of the sole to get the tension you like across your toes.

Note: A lot of our customers report that they like the toe strap looser than they thought they would. Experiment and see what you like best.

Next, just pull the end of the webbing — our proprietary tensioner will hold everything in place. If something feels too tight, juts flip the top of the tensioner up, and the webbing will easily loosen.

Finally, experiment with the tension of the heel strap. If you make it tighter, it’ll move your foot forward a bit. Make it looser and it’ll let your foot slide back.

Once you find the right tension, you have the choice to get in and out of your Z-Trail by either un-doing the heel strap, or loosening the top webbing. Personally, I leave the heel strap in place and use the top webbing to get in and out.

How do I get the right size for my Z-Trail?

Use the templates that are linked on this page (next to where you select the size, and in the product description).

NOTE: Please measure your foot and/or use the templates. Sandal size is very often different than shoe size.

Also, if you have the Z-Trek, you may need a different size in the Z-Trail. The Z-Trek is a TINY bit longer than the Z-Trail, so if your toes come close to the edge in your Z-Treks, you may want to up one size for the Z-Trail.

How do I care for the Z-Trail?

You can wash them with soap and water.

One thing to be careful of: Do not leave your Z-Trail in a hot car or exposed to extreme heat and sunlight (i.e. the back window or dashboard of a car is the WORST). The TrailFoam™ layer will deform if you do this, and this is not covered by our warranty.

Far better than I first thought

Z-Trails are my third model Xero Shoe, their predecessors being Amuri Clouds and Ipari Hanas. I've worn the Clouds constantly for six months of daily wear and two-plus mile fast walks. I am quite mad about them and they are, for me, the definition of Xero Shoes. Haven't worn the Hanas much, since it hasn't gotten cold enough here in the Deep South to give up sandals.
My first experience with the Z-Trails was a bit negative. The ground feel was very different from that of the Clouds -- rather more like that of conventional performance sandals, I thought. On my first long walk they left the pads of both feet skinned and raw. I called customer support and had a long conversation with Adam, who said that there had been no other reports of that problem. We ended up guessing that the problem might have been excessive tightening of the front strap, forcing the ball of the foot too tightly against the shoe's subtly ridged surface.
I returned to the Z-Trails this week, with the straps readjusted to ease tension on the forefoot straps and the problem did NOT recur.
Five miles later, I'm crazy about them. My only quibbles with the Clouds was their tendency to allow my feet to slide inward on the soles and the ground feel on extremely rough surfaces ( e.g. loose gravel atop well-seasoned asphalt).
The Z-Trails deal with both these issues admirably. Surfaces which were downright painful to walk on for any distance in the Clouds were perfectly comfortable in the Z-Trails, and their strapping does a splendid job of keeping your feet in place.
They do provide more ground feel than I first thought, and they're delightfully lightweight. And, of course, they have zero heel drop.
The billing of the Z-Trails as the best Xero Shoes yet is, in my opinion, spot on!

Best sandals I've run in

I've been running minimalist / barefoot for about 5 years, and running in sandals for 2 years. I've tried a few brands and some DIY. By far, the z-trail is my favorite. I also have the z-trek, but they are just a little to thin for rocky trails. The z-trail still gives me the freedom of movement and comfort I love, but with enough stiffness to protect my feet from those medium size rocks that try to punch through your foot. I've only put about 50 miles on the z-trail, but they appear to have the same tough sole of the z-trek. They wear like iron, but still have grip. I like the z-trek / trail lacing system because I don't have to worry about getting the lace perfect to prevent blisters or chaffing that you can sometimes get with the between-the-toe laces. I did a 50K trail ultra in my z-treks and will attempt my first 50 mile trail ultra in my z-trail. Do they "mold" to your foot the way that another popular brand talks about? No, but that isn't necessary. The footbed is flexible, comfortable, and secure.

Right to the 5K!

These sandals are phenomenal! I ordered a pair and wore them running once and then the second time was running the Buckeye (Arizona) Race to the Runway Marathon 5K with my daughter. The felt perfect the first time I put them on. They fit incredibly well and my want to wear them all the time. The switch from standard to zero rise shoes has been incredible. These are the perfect run in the desert shoes. Thank you so much for creating these beauties.

5
essential trail (and road) sandals

First up I'd have loved this review to have appeared as a verified purchase, but I prefer not to have my real name displayed.

This is my second pair of Z-Trails. I've been trail running for months in a mocha pair which I purchased from the (recommendable) UK distributor. The brown colour is great for casual wear or appearing less conspicious. This time I ordered black for some more versatility.

I've run in these in temperatures from 90+° in summer to frosty 32° (with socks, and yes, my feet were toasty). They have been used in the rain, for distance running, hiking, casual wear. A quick scrub with a nailbrush cleans them up and I can wear them around the house, they are great for driving too. They are quite phenomenal sandals (especially for hot or wet weather), and I haven't encountered any terrain yet I wouldn't use them for. The webbing dries in under an hour, far less if you're wearing them.

Functionally you can see these as ultralight and superventilated wide running shoes, as they lock on to the foot better than the classic huarache style. Like huaraches, they seem to actively invite running (it's actually easier to run in them than walk). They are of course far harder wearing than any running shoe, and the burly 10mm sole gives plenty protection.

These cover 80% of my running needs - I really only use something else in really sloppy conditions (the Z-Trails cope fine with those conditions, I'm just soft :) ), or cold windy weather. I haven't found a good windproof/water-resistant foot cover yet.

Postage to Europe was surprisingly extremely low-priced and highly professional, with all the correct paperwork (rare to see this). So a huge 'thumbs-up' for that, it makes life much easier.

However, nine (more than half advertising) emails from Xero between ordering and receipt alone seems just a little too 'in your face' - I am a fan of Xero and enjoy hearing from the company (i.e. I don't wish to opt out completely from the mailing list), but just a little less would be more in this case.

4
A Fascinating Evolution

Watching these products evolve has been a trip. XeroShoes has an iterative approach to creating the ultimate running/everything else sandal that has resulted in many great products. I've tried most of their major releases and I'm so tickled to wear the latest, the Umara Z-Trail. I'd say we're past the Nimbus 2001 and into Firebolt territory now (I recently marathoned all 8 Harry Potter movies). My shin bones are slowly adjusting to the challenge of carrying my body weight around with no shoe support, but the feedback these sandals provide from the trail allows me to correct my running form in real time while slowly building endurance.

Awesomeness:
* Comfort
* Ease of use, multiple ways to take them on and off.
* Stylish!
* Really tough sole of the sandal, and the straps are amazing. Even when wet this sandal handles well, which I can't say as much about the last pair I bought, the straight up Z-treks.
* Haven't had an issue with smell yet, and that's saying something with my feet.

Issues:
* The foam is not super tough on top, so beware of sticky woodland things getting under your feet and stuck onto the foam. Scraping them off will mar the foam.
* Also, at first I was getting sand under my heels, so I would pop the heel cup down with the bottom of my other foot to fling out the sand or whatever. I quickly realized that I was damaging the top back of the heel cup --the foam now looks like it's been chewed. Also, from my clumsiness in the woods, the toes of the sandal are starting to look the same.

There's definitely a learning curve. I'm getting a second pair to wear around other people because my woods ones are only going to get dirtier and more chewed up.

My Umara Z-Trail Desert Adventure

For two months during this summer season, I was on an epic adventure in a desert. The daily ambient temperature averaged 120 degrees Fahrenheit and was perfectly combined with 70%+ humidity. I simply couldn't resist every chance to wear my Xero Umara Z-Trail sandals. Let me tell you something: THESE ARE THE BEST SANDALS I'VE EVER INVESTED TIME & MONEY IN. I absolutely will not go back to another brand of outdoor sandals because of the rugged toughness of this specific brand and model.

On top of the lethal combination of heat and humidity, the setting wasn't all that purty. The desert sands don't play nice with any type of apparel in that environment. After this discovery, I was even more motivated to wear the Umara Z-Trail. And, guess what... These Xero Shoes DID NOT lose the brutal battle against the desert. Therefore, that was the second revelation that these are the best sandals I've ever worn.

Steven and Lena,
Thank you for following your passions and desires to design and create the best shoes on the foot apparel market! Keep up the outstanding work, and may God bless you in all of your endeavors to make our world a better place to live in.

Favorite Xeros yet

I purchased these about a month ago. When they first arrived, I strictly limited myself to walking due to a nagging foot injury. Once I was given the green light to run again, I took them out for a nice half hour run/jog. They were great! Hardly any slipping, even on some big downhills. Additionally, they have the perfect balance, in my opinion, of protection from some of the more technical trails and the ability to feel the terrain. I will say that the strap rubbed the big toes on each of my feet pretty raw, so I probably need to experiment with the adjustments or my running technique. Otherwise, I love these shoes. I am always looking forward to running in them again!

Decent Comfortable Shoe

I have been wearing the Z Trail sandal for a few months now, primarily as an occasional, casual summer sandal. I have not run in the shoes nor do I intend to, and only wear them around town on concrete/asphalt surfaces. The only weakness I see right now is the velcro ankle strap, which is already fraying significantly from repeated use. I have watched the video on how to slide in and out of the shoes while leaving the velcro stap attached, but I don't really care for that. Otherwise, the shoes do seem on the pricey side for what you get, but overall they are a decent, comfortable sandal.

3
soft foam collapsed after three weeks

The sandals are super comfortable and the straps work like a charm.
But after only three weeks of occasional usage, 1 hour walks during the lunchbreaks and some everyday use, the soft foam has collapsed and does not expand again. The chevrons under my heel are flattened. Since the durable sole covers only half of the heel I can see and feel the edge now from the top of the sandal. Even 92kg should not destroy a shoe whithin that period of time.
Also I noticed that the surface became quite slippery when I was trying to run and my feet began to sweat - I did not experience this with my 4mm kit sandals to this extend.
I'll have to try the ztrek sandals, but I think, if the the sole or at least the heel part of the ztrails would be completely made of the proven and durable material, the sandals would be perfect. To me it looks like function was sacrificed for the look.

Love 'em!

I've just had my pair of Z-Trails about a week, but they are the most comfortable sandals I've owned. Except for dress shoes to church, they have been on my feet constantly except when sleeping.
I'm not a runner, but in just a week, for this 59 year old trying to avoid knee surgery the lightness and slight change in my walking gait that occurred with these shoes has already begun to reduce the pain in my knees. Much more stable on my foot than flip-flops for general wear and more comfortable for walking my morning 1.5 miles than than my tennis shoes.
And as a Georgia fan, the fact they were available in Red, Black & Gray was a nice bonus!
These are my first pair but I'm sure they won't be my last pair! Thanks for a great shoe!

3
Almost Ideal

I've been choosing minimal footwear for just about 4 years. My latest investment was the Umura Z-Trail in red, I love the look. These sandals are almost ideal. The fit does not maintain security especially when the sandal is exposed to water and dry-fine dirt. I have walked, ran, and biked in this sandals. Even after adjusting the straps for tighter fit security does not improve. I do rely on my heavy, tough, rugged, go-to chacos when I know I will be near water because the insole and outsole are reliable and secure. I think the straps on these xero shoes are to soft, hence the stretching and give-slippage. The buckle on the inside does not hold place, as soon as I get moving the buckle twist and the fit is lost. I will wear these sandals, but probably in limited applications. I wish they had a Vibram outsole and tougher strap construction, like Chacos minus the weight and structure.

mpearo

I had been out of running when I purchased my first pair of these sandals and I wear them often. I found the fit and feel to be outstanding. I used them a few times when I decided to get back to running. That was when I ordered my second pair. I am using them only for running. The comfort and fit are still outstanding and I have really cool Z-shaped tan lines on the tops of my feet.

OMG, TY TY TY Xero folks.

You are my first enjoyable experience in Huaraches:-)

Just took my first easy run on a rough mountain trail with my new Umara Z- trails here in Winter Park, Colorado

Your Shoes are so much better, kinder, softer and gentler for a Starting Huarache runner than your competitors.
Brilliant design and comfort. Great strap system.

Other trail runnings sandals are like running on bedrocks or the luna’r surface;-)

Thank you again

Love 'em

Been wearing them for about 12 weeks now, about 30 or so miles a week. Pretty much do everything and go everywhere in them, wear them all day, everyday. Walk, run, lift weights, shoot arrows, kayak.

Wearing these sandals, I just finished the 440 mile Yukon River Quest 2016 with my son (we took 2nd Place, tandem kayak). They were the perfect shoe.

I'm 63 and run every other day. I like the minimalist, I like the primal feeling of wearing these while running. Wearing these, I am getting stronger. All the muscles, all the connective tissues in my feet up through my legs are getting stronger.

Running; started off slow; a few hundred yards, then a few miles, now 6 to 8 mile runs. Where I live in the Mohave Desert the geology is gneiss; coarse grained, fractured, and sharp. The rocks, the gravel, the pebbles are all sharp. To run in this type of terrain in any type of shoes is challenging. In these minimalist shoes, that is especially true. You have to pay attention, watching every foot placement. I love that. My body is getting stronger, my mind is staying sharp.

Hello From the Owners

What people are saying about us..

Al Kavadlo

“Xero Shoes are the closest thing to actual barefoot running. Putting them on made me feel like a Native American warrior! They're great for my strength training workouts as well as running"

Al Kavadlo

Tynan

“The shoes basically fade away, and you feel like you’re barefoot all the time. I’ve put hundreds of miles on them, both walking and running, and have never wished for another shoe."

Tynan

Jerrod

“There is nothing I enjoy more than putting on my Xero Shoes and running on trails. My feet have gotten much stronger. And the other day I actually snuck up on a deer!"

Jerrod

Tracy Jones

“These are pretty much the only shoes I wear now. Within a week of putting them on, my plantar fasciitis completely disappeared. I did some arch stretches during this time, but that’s all it took."
